Speed Traffic Cameras & Speed Camera Detectors

OK, I admit that Health & Safety is an odd category to find Speed Cameras and Speed Camera Detectors but I'm sure you can understand why.

Officially, Speed Cameras are used to monitor speeds and ensure road safety. However, they are unsympathetic and so deserve no credit. Many recent newspaper reports have highlighted the revenue generated by Speed Cameras.

Types of Speed Camera

  • GATSO - the (yellow) speed camera that reads rear number plates as you pass it. Lines are painted on the road to help it measure your speed.
  • TRUVELO - these cameras look at you from the front as you pass. There are usually no giveaway lines to warn you.
  • Traffic light red light camera - this is a camera that will flash you if you drive through a red light.
  • SPECS - a new breed of speed camera. One speed camera reads your number plate and then a second speed camera reads your plate a second time. The SPECS system calculates your average speed and fines you if you were speeding.
  • Radar speed cameras are cameras uses by police officers and traffic enforcers.

Speed Camera Detectors

GPS Speed Camera Detectors are the best work around. Whilst they will not stop you from getting a fine and points, they will help warn you of Speed Cameras.

GPS Satellite Navigation systems such as TomTom have third party solutions that can be integrated to help direct you and warn you of fixed location speed cameras.

Currently, radar speed camera detectors are legal but there is pressure to make them illegal as supossedly they interfere with radar Speed Cameras.

Speed camera detectors sit on your dashboard and usually are powered from a bettery within the detector or from your cigarette lighter. The speed camera detector monitors your position using GPS and alerts you if you are approaching a speed camera. Some of the more sophisticated speed camera detectors can tell you your speed, the distance from the speed camera and the speed camera type.
